Combining it with a beach holiday?

Burgas, on Bulgaria's beautiful Black Sea coast, is another airport worth considering if you'd like to extend your trip with a few days by the sea. Jet2 and easyJet offer seasonal flights from several UK airports, including options from the Midlands and London. Plovdiv is approximately three hours away by car.

September is a lovely time to visit the coast, with warm weather and quieter beaches. A fun fact: the sea is usually around 24°C in mid-September, warmer than the sea in Cornwall in August.

Where to stay

Stay in Plovdiv and take a few days to explore the city. These are all central and well reviewed, about half an hour from the venue.

    Bulgarian traditions

A few customs you may see on the day, and how to join in.

One more: Bulgarians traditionally nod for "no" and shake their heads for "yes". It catches everyone out at least once.

    Good to know

    What should I wear?

Our dress code is Garden Formal — think elegant cocktail dresses, flowing midi or maxi dresses, and tailored suits with ties. We'd love everyone to feel dressed up, but comfortable and ready to dance! Part of the celebration will take place outdoors on the lawns, so block heels or flats are a better choice than stilettos, and a light layer is recommended for the evening. We'd love to see some colour! We just kindly ask that white and ivory are reserved for the bride.

What will the weather be like?

Mid-September around Plovdiv is usually warm and sunny in the day, often in the mid-twenties, with cooler evenings in the hills. Bring a light layer for the night.

    Which currency is used?

Bulgaria uses the euro since January 2026. Cards are widely accepted, but a little cash is handy in villages.

    Do I need a visa?

Bulgaria is in the EU and the Schengen area. Rules for UK visitors can change, so check the official travel advice before you go: GOV.UK entry requirements

    Will people speak English?

In Plovdiv hotels and restaurants, yes. Signs are often in Cyrillic, so a translation app helps on the road. And you'll have plenty of Bulgarian friends at the wedding to help.

How far is the venue from Plovdiv?

Perushtitsa is a small town at the foot of the Rhodope mountains, about half an hour's drive south-west of Plovdiv.

Anything to sort before I fly?

Bulgaria is two hours ahead of the UK. Plugs are the European two-pin kind, so pack an adapter. Bring your UK GHIC card for state healthcare, and take out travel insurance too.

    A little more to come

We're still putting the finishing touches on the day, including the timings, transport and menu. We'll share more details in early summer 2027, so you'll have everything you need before the celebration.
